Little Bitty Pretty Ones!

OK, OK!  I know that neither of these wee little weeds is a native wildflower. But darn, they are adorably cute, are they not? They're so tiny, they would make a perfect bouquet for a child's dollhouse.  And they grow in grungy neglected spots where few native flowers would venture, anyway. Corn Speedwell (Veronica arvensis) has royal blue flowers, Thyme-leaved Sandwort (Arenaria serpyllifolia) has white ones, and they sure look pretty when they happen to grow together. Both are introduced from Europe and are now widely naturalized in North America.   I found them growing at the edge of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center parking lot.

  1. Weeds are often lovely volunteers that add so much to our landscapes. As a child, I was mystified not to find chicory in my wildflower book and did not understand why it was excluded as a lowly weed. Yes, we have problems, sometimes enormous ones, with invasives, but these 2 tinies you pictured are indeed wonderful. Thank you.
