But I've never heard a porcupine make any sounds. Um. . . . Would a bear ever occupy a porcupine's cave?
For more than thirty years I've been wandering the woods and waterways of Saratoga County, New York, and regions nearby, looking closely, listening carefully, and recording what I experience. We are blessed in this region with an amazing amount of wilderness right at hand. With this blog I share my year-round adventures here, seeking out what wonders await in my own Madagascar close to home.

Who's That Grunting Down in That Cave?
Be sure to turn up the volume on your computer, and you might hear little gruntings down in this cave. I'm assuming it was a porcupine, since quills and porky scat were all around, and in snowy winter, we can trace porcupine tracks into this cave way up on a ridge overlooking Moreau Lake.

I heard something clearing its throat! I felt a little nervous just hearing it, were you scared?
ReplyDeletePorkies can make some very interesting sounds. Check out the recording at http://www.junglewalk.com/popup.asp?type=a&AnimalAudioID=14845
ReplyDeleteI tried posting this comment yesterday but for some reason it didn't go through.... Apparently porcupines can be quite talkative, or at least the one in this video is! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGz8jcbJjRw
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ellen and Elizabeth, for the links to porcupine vocalizations. Now I know I had no reason to fear the occupant of that cave, since I could always outrun a porky if I had to, but I would not have wanted to disturb a sleepy bear.
